The inevitable happened:
Some players were retained and some were not. A couple of new faces joined the ranks of the CGS professional players. Despite the potential tumultuous nature of a draft Berlin Allianz retained 8 of last year’s players.

Ranked first in '07
Last year’s draft spelled disaster for Milan «xertion» Veeger (21) from the city of Breda in the Netherlands. The Dutch gamer came into the draft with his team «Fnatic» confident of being drafted to one of the two European CGS teams. Fnatic had yet to be defeated in 2007.
- None of us expected not to be drafted to be really honest, Milan «xertion» Veeger said.
It was considered an upset when Berlin Allianz chose Swedish «NoA» over Veeger’s «Fnatic». In fact, the pick created uproar in the gaming community as hundreds of fans showed their support for «xertion’s» team by flaming Allianz and the General Manager.
- Last year their play was on level but I felt they lacked the fire; there was no eye of the tiger – to use a familiar yet bloated expression to describe it. The Dutch team seemed too complacent but it was very much a matter of gut feeling, said Berlin GM Jonas Alsaker «bsl» Vikan.
«xertion» and the rest of «Fnatic» was visibly heartbroken as the controversial pick was called out.
Fought back after tough beat
- We thought we had a good chance as we did well at the combine – even with what was practically a stand in player («proph» was under age) – but the General Managers were not convinced, «xertion» said.
It was a tough beat, and a setback that would have spelled doom for many teams. «Fnatic’s» team is different. The five players have been friends for a long time and refused to give up the dream of professional gaming – even if it meant their union would be dissolved in the 2008 individual draft.
- We came back as this is the greatest opportunity – and the dream of every gamer. You get treated like a real professional when you are doing something you love to do. We thought – let’s go while we still have a shot, Veeger said of returning to this year’s CGS EU event.
Took on all comers
«Fnatic» got off to a great start at the event in Birmingham. They took on all comers and could defeat them with ease. In one of the matches they took the rebuilt Stockholm Magnetik line-up to town on two maps. Despite their stellar play «xertion» was not convinced their chances increased.
- I thought my chances of getting drafted were quite slim, he said.
As the tournament progressed and more teams succumbed to «Fnatic» Veeger’s confidence grew.
- After I started playing on the first I started feeling better about the whole thing. Individually I think I played the best on the first day of the combine and a bit average on the second day.
With the Draft only hours away the General Managers announced their franchise player and protectees – four players that would not be released back into the draft pool. Stockholm chose to secure three CS: S players while Berlin’s General Manager only protected David «olander» Olander-Persson – the team’s franchise player.
- That was obviously part of the entire draft strategy. DoA Male and FIFA performed admirably last year and they deserved their second shot. The racer’s had a dismal start to the season but finished in style by beating Carolina, albeit not by enough points. I’m confident they will handle this season better, and better than the alternatives. For Counter-Strike: Source the talent pool is deeper in Europe, «bsl» said.
Fear of déjà vu
For «xertion» the first picks of the draft gave an agonizing flashback. Two of the Swedish players from 2007, «majk» and «Fifflaren» were re-drafted leaving only two open spots on the team.
- I thought it was going to be déjà vu for us – that we would have to endure 2007 all over again. Still, I was convinced he would take two Fnatic players so I was really, really nervous, Veeger said.
The fourth pick for CS: S was Veeger’s long time team mate Quint «Blaze» Spierenburg. Before the pick was read out «xertion» was seen pointing to his long time team mate as to indicate he deserved it the most – after that Veeger closed his eyes as he waited to get his dreams crushed again with the last pick of the draft. Fate would have it differently this time around.
- The feeling when I heard my name was just awesome, he said.

- I’m someone who can fit in anywhere as I get along with almost everyone. I do think chemistry is extremely important in a team and I’m sure we will have that – it’s also important that we have two strong all-round players in me and «Fifflaren».
A calculated risk
For Berlin’s General Manager the pick is somewhat of a calculated risk.
- Most teams fail when they have to overcome a language barrier – and our team will have to talk English in-game now. However, I selected people I believe in and I have experience with pairing different nationalities, Jonas Alsaker Vikan said.
-I hope the experiences I’ve had in the past will help us overcome this challenge – if we can the possibilities seem endless and it’ll certainly be one of the most exciting teams - and storylines to follow in this year’s Championship Gaming Series’ season.

- Trust me I do know this is risky. It's something I am prepared to assume full responsibility for if I can't make it work. However, the biggest moments in sports are born from taking risks. No guts - no glory. We
will make this work.
