About the author
Jonas Alsaker Vikan is the General Manager of Berlin Allianz. He led the team to a European championship and a third to fourth placing at the first CGS World Final. The twenty six year old Norwegian is also a journalist.

22. July, Los Angeles, USA

The 2008 CGS World Semi-final was a disappointing event for Berlin Allianz. With two games left San Francisco was up by three points and when Counter-Strike: Source and our Dead or Alive Male could not find their form the game was lost, and lost heavily.

The end result was 27 - 14.

Fourth CS:S defeat

Our video reporter Fredrik «slop3» Wahlstedt was backstage in the players lounge after the disheartening defeat. He caught up with David «olander» Olander-Persson to discuss the match and the problems the CS: Source team has had over the course of four weeks in Los Angeles.

- It sucks...

You should have interviewed him a couple days after the defeat, he is quite emotional.

Nothing to blame tough, the whole player draft thing makes is very hard for EU teams to be on top with the communication and team chemistry.

Yea, really good individual players, cant doubt that, but the team needed alot more time to "gel" i guess. Thats what sucks about the drafting players indivually, sucks bad for source.

Good luck for next year.

Well...its all up to bsl ofcourse. But uhm...Personally...I wouldnt draft a full swedish team, coz it didnt worked either in S1? And as far as I know, only you guys can play well + 4kings. But dont think 4kings players are skilled enough to compete with the americans.

Hope next combine crossed will attend (proph and airraid) and that darky finds a team to play with, so that u can draft all 5 ex-fnatic players.

well there's no doubt each player has great individual talent and yes as #2 said, drafting players individually can mean it takes time for the players to settle in and start playing well together as a team.

But in my opinion there are changes that need to be made and seeing the fnatic team playing together again would be great.

the big difference betwen NA and the rest of the world is that they compete in many other tournaments during the year... so they are much better as a TEAM...

It is up to Jonas and whatever he does I support him. I want the best for the Berlin Allianz and if that means 5 guys from France or whatever. So be it.

Truthfully the CGS should either go back to a team draft for Source like S1 or should force just the NA teams to individual draft. Everybody in NA speaks English where as in Europe there are so many different countries under the one continent that you have so much talent but so many languages that counter act what could potentially be a deadly lineup. It's something that the CGS should really look into.

I wouldn't be that disapointed about it. the whole CGS thing just ruins the players and the teams. If the CSS scene worked just like 1.6, events like KODE5, WCG, ESWC.. it would be so much better.

Furthermore, the drafting is kinda retarded. ofc it would be interesting to draft people like PhP, proph, darky, ferus and have them in one team, but as you see, the real power is in the strats.

then former H2K refused CGS right a way, I was like wtf, it must be pretty exciting.. but now I can see the whole event is just a commercial issue. I hope css will get replaced with COD someday and everything will get back to normal. :-)

You cant always be on top. It's a challenge, right? I guess it's the first time you had to speak English with your team mates. Ofcourse that's hard in the beginning to communicate about where the opponents are and etc. Well in my oppinion you made your best shot. Well ofcourse you could have done it better but you cant blame yourself for this. This was just not your day. But I hope you will come back. Perhaps with a new team if that is necesarry.

#14 A lineup of so many different languages and cultures would self destruct way before any success came forth.
