Moments in history

Berliner images with commentary from the 2008 Draft

Name:
Jonas Alsaker Vikan

Position:
General Manager

About the author
Jonas Alsaker Vikan is the General Manager of Berlin Allianz. He led the team to a European championship and a third to fourth placing at the first CGS World Final. The twenty six year old Norwegian is also a journalist.

26. May, Oslo, Norway

There are so many things going on at a draft. For the GM's there are infinite variables to calculate, several games to follow and tons of aspiring gamers to keep a close eye on.

There are also scores of media present to record what we do - and a the German site Readmore has allowed me to choose my favorite «draft moments» from their gallery.

All photos are taken by Daniel Jensen.

This is a different approach to reliving the draft. We hope you enjoy it and the rest of our coverage.

«The Tactical» outside the event.
A concerned captain

This picture was taken outside the Omega Sector before the event got underway.

I like it because you can see the concerned look on Rudolf «The Tactical» Fischer's face - despite putting up a great performance last year there was no way for him to feel secure in the team. He had to attend and earn it just like the other gamers that attended the combine hoped to do. That's how sports should be.

In the end his story had a happy ending as he was protected - relief prevailed over concern.

Looking out into space

I was actually giving an interview to the League site when I was caught contemplating an answer.

«bsl» contemplating.

The picture looks cool because of its setting - and trust me - there was a lot of things on my mind during the days in Birmingham.

This image sort of captures some of the thought processes the General Managers go through prior to picking their team each year.

«olander» with his shirt.
The purple jersey

The player's were not told anything prior to the draft. Some General Managers prefer to let their players know what they think, some even promise them spots on the team - personally I do not tell them anything.

However, Berlin Allianz' franchise player David «olander» Olander-Persson knew in advance I had selected him for the position.

Perhaps that's why he seems very happy to pose with the jersey he was guaranteed to wear for another, hopefully successful year.

Time for new faces

Our Counter-Strike: Source team did great things in 2007. They won us the European trophy when they beat Stockholm to end that match. They saved us again as we seemed doomed against Mexico in the World Quarter Final and they put up a very good fight against the best Source team at the world final, the Carolina Core.

Three original Berlin CS:S members.

Despite their record a new season called for new faces. «Fifflaren», «olander» and «majk» would eventually find themselves back on the team while «haunted» and «nordQvist» had to say their goodbyes. In this photo of the three re-drafted players during the tournament they are probably occupied thinking about who they will play with - or if they are even to be re-drafted - and to what team.

«Liefje» returning.
Berliner girl back

Livia «Liefje» Teernstra was back on Berlin Allianz on Sunday May 18th when Emil «Heaton» Christensson chose to protect his Dead or Alive female «Miss». The attendance record for DoA females in Europe is low and it's a shame. The two girls present crave the competition and the General Managers would more than likely like to see them square off against some other opponents as well.

Having Livia back is a joy though. She is great to work with and her personality make her treasured by her team mates. Her beeming mood, as shown in this photograph, is one of the reasons for that.

I have a feeling that 2008 is the year when she will not have to face that much criticism for her play. At least her level of commitment warrants it.

Intense consideration

This is truly a great image of me and Stockholm's GM «Heaton». This is really what the Draft is about: watching.

«bsl» and «Heaton» on the bench.

Both GM's are watching the Norwegian mixteam. «Heaton» ended up drafting Sondre «REAL» Svanevik with his first pick of the draft - my consideration of their play yielded zero drafted players.

No rest for the weary

We had little over one day to watch our players at this year's draft. That forced us to work very long hours as the gamers played - and there simply was not time to break for lunch or dinner.

«bsl» having a snack.

I was watching «Ferus» play for the Stockholm Magnetik during the late hours of Friday and was extremely hungry. The unhealthy salvation to my problem was getting a bag of chips from one of the vending machines and devouring that with a vengeance as the match went live.

«FinPro» putting on a show
Heeere kitty kitty

I am not entirely convinced Forza Motorsport 2 racer Erno «FinPro» Kuronen is content with this picture. It is difficult to say what the context of this image was - other than that he obviously was very, very happy for being re-drafted to the team.

He was even one of the five protected players announced prior to the draft.

Kuronen ended the 2007 season on a high note as he could hold off the Carolina Core racers to win his semi final race. This year he will have to prove he is worthy of his spot on the team all over again.

Still, he was allowed some celebration in Birmingham before going back home to work on his game.

Papparazzi Reif at work

The League Commissioner presided over the draft, but mostly as a spectator. In this photograph he is caught in the act as he takes some pictures of the event for his private collection.

It's cool that even the League bosses are enthusiastic enough to get their own snapshots of the action as it takes place.

The gang's all there

A couple of hours before the draft the GM's announced the players they wanted to protect from last year.

The lucky one's that got protected was guaranteed a new contract with their respective team as well as being escorted from the audience to the podium by my lovely draft assistant. For Berlin «olander», «Yggdrasil», «FinPro», «Manyna» and «The Tactical» was protected.
